Our View: 'Outstanding' Arsenal player must now be in contention for first PL start since September v Chelsea

Kieran Tierney has not started a Premier League game for Arsenal since September ahead of tomorrow’s huge game with Chelsea.

He has been picked from the start of every single Europa League game, however, as Arsenal qualified top of their group.

The Scotland international actually ensured they finished first, scoring the only goal of the game against FC Zurich on Thursday night.

He could hardly have done much more to impress Mikel Arteta as the Spaniard weighs up his options before the game at Stamford Bridge.

That should put him in contention to get the nod against the Blues, as his battle with Oleksandr Zinchenko continues.

One thing which seems to count against Tierney is Arteta’s preference for his full-backs to come inside and link the play.

That is something Zinchenko is more comfortable with, but how important will that be in a tough away game? Is a pure defender like Tierney more useful?

Especially up against Graham Potter’s wing-back system, which Manchester United managed to exploit last month by pushing their full-backs right up against Chelsea’s back five.

Arsenal are short in midfield slightly, and we are still waiting to see Zinchenko in the central role he often occupies at international level.

That is a way to get him and Tierney in the same team if the Scot gets a Premier League chance and makes himself undroppable.

Kevin Campbell called Tierney ‘outstanding‘ after his last Premier League start, against Brentford in September, and he is now overdue another one in the top flight, especially after Thursday’s outstanding display.
