David Ornstein no longer believes that Eric Dier needs to leave in January for Tottenham Hotspur to sign another centre-back in the window.
Ornstein has suggested that another defender is the priority for Ange Postecoglou next month. Of course, Tottenham are set to be without Micky van de Ven for a while yet after he sustained an injury in the dramatic loss to Chelsea last month.
It was Eric Dier who came on against the Blues. And he played the full 90 minutes against Wolves. However, it was perhaps telling that he was left on the bench as Emerson Royal and Ben Davies played at centre-back against Aston Villa.
David Ornstein no longer thinks Eric Dier needs to leave for Tottenham to land another centre-back in January
Dier is out of contract in the summer, according to Transfermarkt. So moving him on in January is unlikely to be easy. And with that, some may have feared that that may harm their hopes of signing another centre-back.

Ornstein suggested in a Q&A for The Athletic that he thought that that was the case. But the situation has seemingly changed more recently.
“There may be little money to spend but that doesn’t mean Spurs cannot be creative to strengthen their squad. On the centre-back I don’t actually think it requires someone like Dier to leave (which I did previously) but let’s see what the club’s new-look recruitment team, in conjunction with Postecoglou, Munn and Levy, manage to do,” he said.
May still be best for all parties if Englishman finds his next club
It would seemingly be beneficial for Tottenham and Dier for him to find a new club next month. Spotrac shows that he earns £85,000-a-week.
But if he is prepared to see out his contract, there is not a great deal Spurs can do. So it is a positive that his immediate future may not dictate whether they can sign another centre-back.
It is clear just how important Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are to Postecoglou’s side. So if they could find another defender who ticks some similar boxes, that is going to be hugely beneficial.
