Spanish outfit Real Valladolid have confirmed on their official website that they have signed Oriol Rey from Leeds United on a three-year deal.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder spent last season out on loan at Conquense in his native Spain and has returned there on a permanent basis.

He was in a matchday squad for the Whites last season, the 2-2 draw against Swansea City, but leaves Elland Road without having made a real impression.

That didn’t stop him taking to Twitter after his switch was confirmed to thank the club and the fans for all their support and wish them luck for the future.

Leeds have done a lot of work on getting young talent to Elland Road in recent years and Rey came from Barcelona with the promise of breaking into the first team.

But even with Marcelo Bielsa’s willingness to work with a small squad and give young players a chance, Rey was unable to force his way through.

It’s perhaps best for both player and club that he goes back to Spain to get his career going again, with regular gametime, form and fitness.

But it’s also clear from his message that he holds the club in decent regard – but Leeds fans will hope that there can be more breakthroughs this season.
