Jurgen Klopp’s has looked to perk up Liverpool’s faltering attack this season by flitting between his favoured 4-3-3 system and a brand-new 4-2-3-1 and Roberto Firmino has suffered as a consequence.
The livewire Brazilian was at the centre of everything that was so dangerous about Liverpool last season; setting off the press and dropping deep to create the space for Mo Salah to burst into to devastating effect.
This time around, he has been shunted between that false nine role and a number ten role, which does not really suit his direct style or get him close enough to goal.
The result has been an inconsistency of performance; Klopp hasn’t wanted to drop him but at present, he is not playing well enough to keep his place in the side.

But as the busy festive period kicks in, there will be a need for natural rotation and that will require Klopp to explore some actions he perhaps hasn’t considered thus far this season.
Divock Origi came from nowhere to take centre stage in Sunday’s Merseyside derby and the confidence that has given him will make him a completely different animal to Firmino.
That’s why Klopp should give him a first start of the season at Turf Moor tonight to kickstart the Reds’ stuttering attack.
