Opinion: Spurs need to move for 'unbelievable' CB, he's 6ft 6in, reportedly £16m and wants a move

Spurs have a busy summer ahead of them in wake of another trophyless and largely fruitless campaign.

Tottenhamhttps://tbrfootball.com/category/english-premier-league/tottenham-hotspur/ missed out on the Champions League and Europa League, though they did at least make the inaugural Conference League.

In addition, Spurs are looking for a new manager after sacking Jose Mourinho in April.

Tottenham have struggled at the back for a long time now, and they could do with bringing in new defenders.

Spurs were linked with Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer last year and he’d certainly be a good shout this summer.

In April 2020, Sporten reported that Tottenham were ready to reignite their interest in Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer.

The defender’s former agent claimed that a move in summer 2020 was likely for his client.

Although a new agency now represents Ajer, football.london then suggested Tottenham were eyeing him last summer.

Since then, speculation has cooled off between Tottenham and Ajer, with Newcastle now apparently keen on him.

The 23-year-old’s Celtic contract expires next summer, increasing speculation linking him with a move.

Now, Ajer has admitted that he’s looking for a move away.

“Top five league”

Speaking to Norway’s VG, via BT Sport, he said: “There are many rumours, and right now there are only rumours.

“It is clear that something will happen this summer. It is the best for both parties.”

Regarding potential destinations, Ajer said: “(In terms of which) club, I do not want to go into anything.

“We’ll get to that later, but it’s a top five league I aim for.”

He added: “I have gained good experience after playing almost 180 games for a top club like Celtic.

“I have experienced how football can be on good and bad days. So it has been a very good experience.”

Lee Clark managed Ajer at Kilmarnock and spent time in his playing and coaching days at Newcastle.

He has given NUFC Matters a glowing assessment of his former player.

“Unbelievable”

“He is an outstanding player,” Clark told NUFC Matters. “I have seen quotes of £6-8million out there.

“Definitely a player you can improve and he will be worth a lot more than that.

“He is an unbelievable professional – he was captain of Norway when he was still a teenager.

“He is six foot six inches and is the type of player who always wants to stay back and do that bit extra.

“And for the price, there is a lot of ability there. There is some rawness and some rough edges that need smoothed out.

“A lot of clubs out there… didn’t want to take a risk on Virgil van Dijk because he played in the Scottish league and didn’t get tested. There are similarities.

“This is a player who could become a real asset for Newcastle United. He is a player who will do anything to get to the very top.”

Spurs could land him for not very much at all

According to the Daily Record, Celtic want £16million for him, though Newcastle apparently think they can sign him for £8million.

Even the higher estimate is hardly bank-breaking for a club like Spurs, so they should look into rekindling their interest in Ajer.
