TBR View: Arsenal would be wrong to retain ace who missed nine big chances this season amid fans clash on Twitter
Alexandre Lacazette seems to be causing a bit of a stir on Twitter with fans on one side claiming the striker should be sold, whilst others are defending him after his performances this season.
One user of the social media platform called out the Frenchman for never having scored more than 13 Premier League goals during his four years in England. However, another supporter claimed it was due to his lack of starts in the top-flight.
Lacazette has endured what can only be described as a rollercoaster season. After starting the campaign off with goals in each of his first three league games, the former Lyon man then went on a blip which saw him score once until mid-December.
He returned to form in the second half of the term, but, his reputation as an inconsistent finisher continued with a raft of missed chances, including a glorious one in the Europa League tie with Slavia Prague.
However, the stats are fairly strong weighted in the Frenchman’s favour. After starting just 22 times in the top division, he notched up 13 goals, the most of any player in Mikel Arteta’s side.
He ended up with 19 goals throughout all competitions and after a campaign of mass struggle for the Gunners, it proves a decent return.
But, the use of stats can only tell you so much about a player. Using your eyes can sometimes trump statistical data, very much the case with the 29-year-old.
Throughout the 2020/2021 season, the number nine missed a staggering nine big chances in the league. His guilt-edged chance from mere yards out against Aston Villa just encapsulates why despite all the statistical data, Arsenal can’t retain the forward for next season.
A new forward should be at the top of the shopping list for Arteta and the club especially after finishing as the joint-eighth highest goalscorers amongst the top 11 in the Premier League.
