O’Nien surely set for bigger Sunderland role after Power’s red card

Max Power received his third red card of the season in Saturday’s draw with Walsall, which is simply unacceptable.

Having joined Sunderland in the summer from Wigan Athletic, fans held high hopes that Power would be a successful signing.

But the 25-year-old has been hot-headed and irresponsible.

Power has surely lost the faith of the fans now and earning his place back in this side will be an uphill task.

How can Jack Ross place his trust in a player with such a poor disciplinary record? Power arguably cost Sunderland two points yesterday and might cost them more.

With three red cards in 10 games, Power needs a spell on the sidelines, even when he returns from suspension.

And it could be Luke O’Nien who takes his place after an impressive performance against Walsall.

O’Nien came off the bench shortly after the break against Walsall and produced a game-changing display.

It has been a slow start to life at The Stadium of Light for the 24-year-old, who moved from Wycombe Wanderers in the summer.

But he announced himself to Sunderland fans yesterday and could be set for a bigger role in Power’s absence.

O’Nien now needs to capitalise on this form and Power’s absence to nail down a regular spot in the Sunderland team.
