One year since Ibrox links, Matej Vydra may need Rangers more than they now need him

Heading into the January transfer window, Matej Vydra may feel a real sense of deja vu having been linked with Rangers and an Ibrox loan move at the start of this year.

The Daily Record reported that the Gers wanted to sign Vydra for the rest of the campaign. However, Burnley rejected the Light Blues’ interest in the £11 million forward.

At the time, it appeared to be a blow for Steven Gerrard’s men to miss out. Rangers were five points adrift of the league leaders at that point in the season. And they had recently suffered a hugely disappointing 2-1 defeat to Hearts.

Vydra had not had the best spell at Turf Moor. But he had previously scored 21 league goals in the season before he joined the Clarets. And his ability to play as a striker or as a number 10 would have made him particularly valuable in Gerrard’s system.

Vydra went on to score two goals before the end of the campaign. And Rangers would, of course, be unable to claw back the deficit in the league table.

Unfortunately for the 28-year-old, it appears that he is in a similar boat heading into this January window.

According to a report from Lancs Live, Vydra is keen to leave Turf Moor. He has made one Premier League start this season.

It would be little surprise if Burnley receive offers for the Czech Republic international when the window opens.

However, it is currently difficult to see Rangers making another move.

While Vydra’s situation has not changed much, the Gers are currently in a vastly different position.

Gerrard’s men top the league table by 11 points. Even if Celtic win their games in hand, they will still be five points off the summit. And in truth, the Hoops are giving Rangers very little to worry about right now.

They are also in a fantastic position in the Europa League group-stages. And it would certainly take a brave person to bet against Rangers ending their wait for silverware this season.

Of course, Gerrard will not allow his players to show any complacency. And thus, he may be open to doing more business in January. And perhaps Vydra’s situation may still catch his eye.

But Rangers seem to now be in a position which means that they arguably do not need to reignite interest in an £11 million international forward from a Premier League club.
