2. Getting one over on United: Liverpool 2-0 Manchester United (10/03/16); Manchester United 1-1 Liverpool (17/03/16)
Manchester United’s failure to advance past the Champions League group stages saw them drop down to the Europa League, which Liverpool had been playing in all season. After negating the tricky round of 32, the two English giants were drawn against each other in the last 16.
United had beaten Liverpool twice already in the season, so it was important that Klopp got the right result. It started well with a blistering win at Anfield, where Daniel Sturridge and the increasingly influential Roberto Firmino bagged goals.
The return leg was, although much in Liverpool’s favour, still a tough game to call. Anthony Martial put the Red Devils ahead early on in the match, but a sparkling solo goal by Philippe Coutinho on the stroke of half time made the tie secure.
It was an exemplary showing of how to negotiate a European tie, and doing it against your fiercest rivals just makes it a little bit sweeter.
