3. Opening day thriller: Arsenal 3-4 Liverpool (14/08/16)
Although the German never used it as an excuse himself, there was a general feeling that Liverpool’s eighth place finish in 2015/16 was down to Klopp inheriting Brendan Rodgers’ stuttering side. In many ways, the opening day of the current season was the biggest test of Klopp’s short managerial reign, as it gave a glimpse into how successful both his transfer dealings and pre-season preparation was.
In short, it was proved to be excellent. Although the Reds had a difficult opening to the game, largely down to the disappointing Alberto Moreno, Philippe Coutinho had got them to half time level and they ran riot in the start of the second period.
Adam Lallana slotted in a second, collecting new signing Georginio Wijnaldum’s pass to do so, Coutinho rounded off a 19-pass move to make it three and Sadio Mane, who had scored four times against Klopp’s Liverpool in the previous season, thumped in an emphatic fourth.
Liverpool let Arsenal back into the game after that, ensuring a tense finish, but they held out for what was a massive statement of intent.
