It’s over a year since Tottenham fans were dreaming of signing Juventus forward Paulo Dybala and 12 months on, he looks very much like one that got away.
In June, Dybala told Goal that he had held talks with both Tottenham and Manchester United but ultimately chose to stay at Juventus.
Ultimately that looked a wise decision. As Tottenham were swapping managers and losing their place in the Champions League, Dybala has been in form so good that Real Madrid are sniffing around the Argentine.
According to Italian news outlet Sport Mediaset, the La Liga champions could be about to try and sign the forward for £90 million this summer.
Dybala has been instrumental under Maurizio Sarri during 2019/20 and although he couldn’t prevent a Champions League exit, his Serie A form was good.
He netted 17 goals and registered 14 assists in all competitions and was largely impressive for the Old Lady as they won another league title.
Tottenham swapped Mauricio Pochettino for Jose Mourinho during their campaign. The latter was unable to prevent Spurs from falling out of the Champions League and will next season compete for the Europa League.
Dybala was always likely to prove an ambitious signing for Tottenham and he wouldn’t have come cheap.
With that in mind, hindsight looks like a weird and wonderful thing but the 26-year-old could have been a significant signing to take Spurs to the next level.
Harry Kane and Son Heung-min missed large chunks of the season through injury and having Dybala in their ranks could have made all the difference.
Dybala’s strong campaign and the interest from Los Blancos will ensure Spurs continue to look at the 29-cap international as one transfer deal that got away.
