A year ago today would have been one of celebration for Leeds United’s Spanish talent Oriol Rey. This time last year the former Barcelona youngster was handed a new deal at Elland Road. He signed an extension which would keep him at the West Yorkshire club until the summer of 2020.
He then played a role in pre-season and, in August, was included in Marcelo Bielsa’s matchday squad for the clash with Swansea City.
So, one year on, how does his future at Leeds United look?
Not long after that Swansea bench appearance, Rey was on his way. Leeds sent him out on loan to Conquense in Spain’s third-tier. He has been showing off his versatility with his new club. Playing at centre-midfield, centre-back and in both full-back positions, he appears perfect for Bielsa.

He has also been a regular, featuring in over 30 league games for the club.
However, Conquense go into the final game of the season needing a win and results to go their way, or they will be relegated.
The development of several other young players who operate in his positions, such as Jamie Shackleton, Mateusz Bogusz, Pascal Struijk and Aapo Halme certainly gives him a challenge on returning to Thorp Arch.
Rey may have a contract until 2020 but it is extremely hard to see him having a long-term future at Leeds based on the events since he signed his new deal.
