One winner, one loser as Leeds United lose in the EFL Cup

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa tasted defeat for the first time since arriving in West Yorkshire on Tuesday evening, as his side were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by divisional rivals Preston North End.

The Whites were not at the races throughout the contest and strikes from Daniel Johnson and Brandon Barker saw the visitors leave with a third-round tie to look forward to.

Leeds did make some changes to the side that thrashed Norwich City on Saturday, but it was a side that still featured some summer recruits and players more than capable of winning the game.

On a disappointing night for Leeds, The Boot Room looks at one winner and one loser from the 2-0 reverse.

Winner – Stuart Dallas

The Northern Ireland international has only been part of one matchday squad under Bielsa in the Championship this season and there had been doubts cast over his future at Elland Road.

The 27-year-old will have been delighted to earn the chance to play 90 minutes for the Whites against Preston, especially having experienced some injury issues of late.

Dallas will now hope to kick on and earn more opportunities under the club’s new manager with his fitness problems firmly behind him.

Tottenham Hotspur
Loser – Patrick Bamford

The summer recruit from Middlesbrough netted his only goal for the club to date in the previous round against Bolton Wanderers, but he didn’t cover himself in glory against Preston on Tuesday evening.

The 24-year-old has not started a league game for his new club yet and given his frustrating performance here it seems like he may be forced to wait a little while longer.

Bamford clearly has a decent pedigree at Championship level but with Leeds boasting lots of attacking talent it is safe to say he will be looking to get up to scratch as quickly as possible.
