Newcastle United are all set to sign Federico Fernandez from Swansea City. As reported by the Shields Gazette, the Toon have agreed a £6 million fee with Swansea for the player. Fernandez will now head to Tyneside to complete his transfer.
It is a good move for Newcastle, who needed extra strengthening at the back. But who wins and who loses from this deal…?
Winner – Joe Rodon
After an excellent loan spell at Cheltenham Town, the Welsh under-21 star looks set for involvement in the first-team at the Liberty Stadium this season.
A ball-playing centre-half who has been favourably compared to John Stones in style, the pathway to first-team action is clearing up. With Fernandez going, Jordi Amat seemingly on his way and Kyle Bartley already gone Swansea fans may see a lot of Rodon this season, even if a loanee is also brought in.
Loser – Ciaran Clark
Fernandez is now Newcastle’s second centre-back arrival this summer. With Florian Lejeune out for most of the season with a knee injury, it leaves four on the books for the Magpies.
The Argentine newbie will no do battle with fellow incomer Fabian Schar, captain Jamaal Lascelles and Clark.
The Irish international will have to play at his best week-in-week-out to keep the newcomers at bay and retain his starting place at St James’ Park.
