One winner and loser as Crystal Palace swoop for Liverpool’s Marko Grujic

Reports this week in the Daily Mail suggest Crystal Palace have identified Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic as a replacement for Ruben Loftus-Cheek in their midfield and will try to bring the Serbian international into their ranks on a season-long loan.

Grujic has made only eight appearances from the bench for Liverpool in the Premier League since joining the Reds in 2016 for £5 million from Red Star Belgrade.

The news, however, will come as a blow to Neil Warnock and Cardiff City who had the 22-year-old on loan last season in Wales, making 14 appearances for his side in their promotion to the Premier League.

Here at The Boot Room, we identify one winner and one loser as Crystal Palace make a move for Marko Grujic.

Winner – Marko Grujic

With Liverpool only likely to let the 22-year-old leave Anfield on a season-long loan, the opportunity to play week in, week out for a Premier League side will only benefit Gruijic’s development.

Grujic has come on leaps and bounds since his loan spell in the Championship last season, and the chance to step up a level to the Premier League won’t do the Serbian international any harm.

Liverpool could reap the rewards of letting him out on loan again, and with the arrival of Naby Keita and Fabinho in the Reds midfield this summer, it would be hard for Grujic to get any real game time in the English top flight if he stayed with Jurgen Klopp’s side for the season.

Loser – Neil Warnock and Cardiff City

Neil Warnock hasn’t hidden the fact he would like to bring Grujic back to the Cardiff City Stadium for a second consecutive season, and the Serbian international played a significant role to the Welsh side’s promotion push in their last campaign.

Cardiff aren’t entirely out of the race just yet. However, Crystal Palace would provide a better environment for Grujic to grow into the player Liverpool want him to be than the Welsh capital.

The fact Ruben Loftus-Cheek performed and improved so well at Palace last season on loan from Chelsea only provides the Reds with more motive to loan him to the London club rather than Warnock’s side.
