One winner and loser in Max Meyer’s reported transfer to Crystal Palace

Premier League club Crystal Palace are closing in on the signing of free agent Max Meyer following his release from German outfit Schalke, according to The Guardian.

It seems a ridiculous thought that such a highly-rated young player can be available on a free transfer, but nonetheless Eagles’ boss Roy Hodgson is seemingly extremely close to pulling off a superb deal for the South London-based club.

The 22-year-old who can play in a number 10 role, or slightly deeper, has been the subject of interest from the likes of Arsenal, Marseille and Liverpool this summer, although his future now lies at Selhurst Park.

Palace haven’t been overly busy this summer and some people had been worried by the lack of incoming signings from the transfer window. This deal will, however, delight the supporters and offers them hope that a successful season can be achieved.

Here, we take a look at one winner and one loser from this massive transfer for Crystal Palace…

Winner – Roy Hodgson

The former England boss won’t have been happy with the amount of players he has managed to sign this summer, but the recruitment of Meyer is certainly one worth waiting for.

Some eyebrows were raised when the Eagles appointed Hodgson as the club’s manager and although he finished the season strongly last time around, he will hope to better the club’s 11th place finish from 2017/18.

The addition of such a bright, attacking, young talent will give him every chance of progressing Palace as a football club.

Loser – Jonny Williams

The 24-year-old was probably chomping at the bit to finally get a chance in the Crystal Palace team next season but the signing of Meyer offers yet another setback for the Wales international.

Williams went on loan to Sunderland last season where he played 12 times, and given this latest signing for the Eagles he must be starting to think that his future lies elsewhere.

This last week, here at The Boot Room, we asked the question of whether or not Williams had a future with Palace and in signing Meyer, Roy Hodgson has offered a firm indication that the answer is an emphatic no.
