Timo Werner made his Tottenham debut today and helped his new team pick up a vital point against Manchester United.
The German was only signed last week but was thrown straight into the starting XI with Dejan Kulusevski dropping out of the squad through illness.
In the end, it turned out to be a decent enough debut for Werner. He got himself an assist by helping Rodrigo Bentancur score the second goal of the game for Spurs before being taken off to be replaced by Bryan Gil.
However, Werner was also partly responsible for United taking the lead in the game, and watching on for BBC 5 Live, pundit Clinton Morrison pointed out the defensive flaws in Werner’s game.
“One thing Werner has to do is to get back and help out his full-back there. He’s left him two on one, Dalot’s run past him, so not only is it important for him to go forward, he needs to do his defensive duties,” Morrison said.

Werner will learn quickly under Postecoglou
There’s no chance Ange Postecoglou will stand for any players in his squad not putting the hard yards in and you suspect he’ll be on at Werner quite quickly.
The debut in itself from the German was fine. He showed some good moments and his speed and persistence down the left was a plus.
However, defending is a massive part of the game and under Ange, Werner will need to learn quickly to bring this into his game.
It showed today how switching off can be so costly at this level.
So while Werner’s focus might be on scoring goals and helping in the attacking third, his defensive duties are going to be equally as important.
Overall, though, Werner can be happy enough with how today went. United away is not the easiest debut going and he can be content enough heading back to London.
