'One that jumps out': Darren Bent urges Aston Villa to go and sign £50m Premier League striker now
Bent spoke on TalkSPORT yesterday and identified Toney as a player that Villa should be targeting this summer.
Reports have suggested that the Bees value their frontman at £50 million amid apparent interest from Leeds United.
The 26-year-old was brilliant for Thomas Frank’s men last season in what was his debut campaign in the Premier League.
The striker managed 12 goals and five assists for Brentford and also opened his account for this season with a goal against Leicester on Sunday.
And TalkSPORT pundit Darren Bent thinks Gerrard should be trying to bring Toney to Villa Park this summer.
Bent urges Villa to sign Toney
When discussing who Villa should sign on TalkSPORT, Bent said: “Ivan Toney is the one that jumps out to me.”
Gerrard already boasts two decent options in Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings, but neither have managed to hit the back of the net as frequently as the boss would like them to.
Between the pair, they only managed 18 Premier League goals last season and failed to score in Villa’s opener against Bournemouth on Saturday.
Gerrard’s men fell to a 2-0 defeat to the league’s new-boys and may look to strengthen their attacking options before the window shuts.
TBR’s View: Toney would be brilliant for Villa but they would have to sell first
Ings hasn’t quite managed to capture the goalscoring form that earned him the move to Villa from Southampton last summer.
Watkins was slightly more prolific last season as he bagged 11 goals in the Premier League but Toney would be a brilliant alternative option for Gerrard.
The Brentford man is an imposing player who’s quick and strong, and he would represent a different type of striker for Villa.
But as Gerrard already has Watkins and Ings, it seems unlikely that they will move for Toney, unless they sold one of the pair this summer.
With Brentford apparently wanting £50 million for Toney, Villa would also have to spend big to bring the striker to the club and it may not be a priority position to strengthen for Gerrard at this moment in time.
