One of the real reasons why Tottenham want to sign Timo Werner has been shared

In a surprising turn of events, Timo Werner looks set to join Tottenham.

The former Chelsea man had been linked to Manchester United this month, but it’s Spurs who have stole a charge on this front now with a deal looking more and more likely to be done in the coming hours.

This move is rather confusing for some. After all, Werner was truly terrible during his last stint in England. However, there is some method behind the madness.

Indeed, according to Ben Jacobs, one of the main reasons Spurs want to sign Werner is due to his versatility.

The German is capable of playing both as a number nine and on the left wing, and that’s apparently something that has appealed to Spurs.

Werner’s versatility apparently appeals to Tottenham, but we can’t for the life of us figure out why.

Of course, it’s good to have attackers who can cover the wide positions too, but don’t Spurs already have loads of players in that mould?

Heung-Min Son and Richarlison can both play either up front or on the left, while Manor Solomon, Brennan Johnson and Bryan Gil are all capable of playing down that left flank too.

In our view, Werner isn’t an upgrade on what Spurs already have, and he doesn’t add depth to a position that is in desperate need of it.

Of course, Son is away for the next month at the Asian Cup, but as Jacobs says, this deal isn’t apparently down to the fact Son is going away.

This is one of the more bizarre deals that will happen this January, but if Ange Postcoglou does indeed want Werner, who are we to question the Australian and his plans for this Spurs team after such a fantastic start to the season?

It will be interesting to see where Werner plays and how he performs for Tottenham, that’s for sure.
