Cristian Romero was up to his old tricks again on Monday evening as he was sent off against Chelsea.
The Argentine has been brilliant so far this season, but we saw a bit of the old Romero on Monday as he was red-carded for a reckless challenge.
This sort of short fuse has been something of a running theme throughout his career, and speaking on Off The Ball, Nedum Onuoha has given his verdict on the defender.
Onuoha says that while Romero is one of the best defenders in the world, he can be a dangerous player to have in your team as you can never really predict whether or not he’ll have one of those games where the red mist descends and he spirals out of control.

Romero dangerous
Onuoha gave his verdict on the Tottenham defender.
“Can you be a great defender if you have the recklessness of Romero?” Onuoha was asked.
“I think the way he lives on the edge at times is his biggest issue, but you could say the same for the likes of Sergio Ramos and people like that and really successful centre-backs. Most of us want that Rolls Royce centre-back who barely makes a tackle, but that’s how his mind works. He’s been fantastic for Spurs so far this season, maybe it’s a South American edge because I’ve played with a few like that. I guess he is one of the best in the world and he’s got that World Cup winners’ medal, so that’s fine I think,” Onuoha said.
“I think he does have a tendency, what makes it more alarming for me is that you can’t see his face change when the red mist kicks in. He can appear quite calm in the game and then he takes someone’s leg out, that’s the most dangerous type of player to play against.”
Double-edged sword
This is the issue with a player like Romero, having him in your team is a double-edged sword.
The defender is a fantastic talent, but he could just as easily lose you a game as he could win you one.
He plays on the edge, and, sometimes, he goes over the edge, and while it is dangerous to have a player like that in your team, eight times out of 10, it’s worth it.
Romero is a fantastic player, but you’re taking a real risk having someone like that in your backline.
