‘One of the best around’: Rangers midfielder earns huge praise from former coach

Glasgow Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has been a major asset for Steven Gerrard’s side for the past 18 months, not to mention his triumphant spell at Ibrox a decade ago.

The Gers veteran has now been described as “one of the best” players around by Lawrie Sanchez, his compatriot and former manager, in conversation with the Scottish Sun.

Davis, a boyhood Bear, initially joined Rangers on loan in January 2008 before signing permanently in the summer.

The Northern Irishman’s first spell at Ibrox was successful as he lifted three Scottish titles, two Scottish Cups, three Scottish League Cups and reaching the UEFA Cup final.

A spell at Southampton followed, and in 2019, with Rangers back in the Scottish Premiership, he rejoined the Ibrox side – again, first on loan, before signing permanently.

Now on international duty, fellow countryman Sanchez – who signed Davis from Aston Villa when he was Fulham boss – couldn’t sing his praises highly enough.

“He’s always been what managers call a nine out of ten,” he told the Scottish Sun. “You just know what you are getting as he is so consistent. Even now he is the same.

“He doesn’t carry any baggage and is the ultimate professional. One of the best around. If you speak to any player who has played with him, they will tell you how good he is.

“He deserves all the accolades. You don’t get to where he has without being a brilliant player, but also having a quiet determination.

“Some captains rant and rave while others lead by what they do on and off the pitch. Steven is one of the best examples of this.”

There can’t really be much added to what Sanchez has said about Davis – he is a superb player and professional, and Rangers are lucky to have him.

As things stand, Davis’ contract runs until 2021, and with him turning 36 next year, it remains to be seen what his future holds at Ibrox.

That said, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him play for a few more years, much like Jermain Defoe – and hopefully he’ll be able to help Rangers to more silverware.
