‘On the day’: Antonio now shares what the referee said to West Ham’s players after Saints scored on Saturday

West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has shared what the referee said to his teammates after Southampton’s goal on Sunday.

Antonio was speaking on the Footballer’s Football podcast, and talking to Newcastle’s Callum Wilson about the incident.

As with every weekend, there were plenty of refereeing talking points across the Premier League.

Southampton opened the scoring via a deflected effort from full-back Romain Perraud that gave Lukasz Fabianski no chance.

However, the referee appears to get in the way of Jarrod Bowen as he looks to prevent Perraud from scoring.

Despite the protests from West Ham’s players, the goal stood, much to the annoyance of manager David Moyes.

“And then they scored a goal which is never a goal because of the referee’s position,” Moyes said.

“The referee blocks Bowen getting to the ball, and it is ridiculous that he doesn’t do anything about it.

“I just cannot understand how that goal can stand.”

West Ham’s players protest to the referee that a drop ball should have been given fell on deaf ears.

“It’s exactly what we said [why wasn’t it a drop ball],” Antonio said.

“We went if you didn’t block Jarrod then he gets the ball and he doesn’t put it in the back of the net.

“The referee said on the day, I can’t take it back unless the ball hits me.

“He cannot take the ball back and stop the game unless the ball hits him.

“It’s difficult situation, it’s against the rules, and he has to be on the pitch, but it should be a drop ball.

“As soon as he notices that he stopped Jarrod from getting the ball, it should be a drop ball.”

West Ham’s attention will now turn to their next match, as they travel to Anfield tonight.

Moyes has joked that the Hammers are ‘quite aware’ of just how good Liverpool are after their wins over Rangers and Manchester City.

Ben Johnson has backed Antonio to break back into the starting line-up after the emergence of Gianluca Scamacca.

Whoever starts tonight, Antonio will be hoping that there’s no more conversations with referees about difficult decisions.
