A number of Liverpool fans have called for Xherdan Shaqiri to be named in the Reds starting XI for tomorrow’s League Cup third-round match.

The 28-year-old has made 41 competitive appearances for Liverpool since his move to Anfield two years ago, but is yet to feature this season.

Even last season, Shaqiri only made 10 appearances in all competitions last season, featuring for just 228 minutes, and his three starts came during the busy December period.

The Liverpool Echo reported earlier this month that the Reds remain open to offers for Shaqiri – on a reported £80,000-a-week contract until 2023 – though they’re not actively looking to move him on.

Even if the Switzerland international were to stay at Anfield, there are plenty of Liverpool fans eager to see him get game time, something that has eluded him for a while now.

And with Liverpool in League Cup action away at Lincoln tomorrow, there is desire from some Reds fans to see Shaqiri given a start:

Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson and Joel Matip remain unavailable for Liverpool and will not be considered for tomorrow’s third-round tie, the Reds have confirmed.

Meanwhile, teenage centre-back Billy Koumetio underwent a fitness check on Wednesday after missing training in the preceding days.
