Celtic crashed out of this season’s Betfred Cup after a shock 2-0 defeat to Ross County at Parkhead on Sunday afternoon with the pressure ramping up on Hoops gaffer Neil Lennon – and on-loan Rangers star Stephen Kelly has reacted on Instagram.
Celtic went into the match with the pressure almost at boiling point. Just two wins in nine games had seen the Green Brigade hold up a banner calling on Lennon’s time as manager, while Chris Sutton had stated he could no longer stick up for Lennon.
A second successive 4-1 defeat to Sparta Prague on Thursday and a Europa League exit after just four of six group games has seen criticism fly in for Lennon. A 2-0 defeat to Ross County – a side Celtic should comfortably beat – is even more damning.
A first-half penalty from Ross Stewart and a late strike from Alex Iacovitti saw Ross County not only beat Celtic – but do it at Parkhead. Rangers star Kelly, 20, posted on Instagram – uploading a picture that included a crestfallen Ryan Christie.
TBR’s view – Kelly future? Lennon future?
For Lennon, it is hard to see how the Celtic legend moves forward from this. Yes, he is a Hoops legend and fans would like nothing more than a club legend to help the team clinch 10 in a row. But with 10 in a row on the line, a decision is needed.
Celtic do not have time to wait. A decision needs to be made before it is too late and after Sunday’s loss, is he really the man to take Celtic to 10? At the other end of the spectrum, Kelly starred for Ross County and surely has a future at Rangers.
Steven Gerrard has hardly brought any young Gers players through from the academy on a regular basis, though Leon King and Ciaran Dickson amde debuts on Sunday. But if anyone is capable of impressing Gerrard, Kelly certainly is.
