Tottenham Hotspur are facing a striker shortage going into this weekend’s clash with Chelsea. Harry Kane remains out with a hamstring injury and Heung-min Son now looks set to miss the majority of the season with a broken arm.
It leaves Jose Mourinho short in attacking options, with youngster Troy Parrott and midfielders Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela, and Dele Alli his best striking options.
The injury to Son once again highlights Tottenham’s disappointing end to the January transfer window, in which they were linked with a host of striking targets. One of those apparent targets could come back to haunt them this weekend.
Tottenham face London rivals Chelsea in the Premier League at the weekend and it seems Olivier Giroud might be in the starting XI at the Stamford Bridge. Tammy Abraham missed the Monday Night Football game with Manchester United through injury and Michy Batshuayi struggled in his place. Giroud came on and scored, only for it to be ruled out for an extremely marginal offside.

Giroud, was one striker Tottenham were linked with signing in the January transfer window. As reported by The Sun, Spurs had every chance of snapping up the Frenchman if the Blues secured a replacement, namely Napoli’s Dries Mertens. In fact, the report claimed Tottenham had even agreed a fee with Chelsea. That did not happen and Giroud, whose current contract expires at the end of the season, remained.
The Times suggested Spurs were willing to pay £4.5 million for the World Cup winner but Chelsea wanted nearly double that amount, so the eventual fee agreed likely sat somewhere in between. Right now, there is no doubt that Mourinho would love to have a striker of Giroud’s experience available to him for the final stretch of the season.
Instead, he might just punish Mourinho’s new team at his old home this weekend.
