Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Oliver Skipp has shared what the whole Spurs bench was “screaming” at Pedro Porro in Friday night’s FA Cup third-round win over Burnley.

The Tottenham academy graduate, speaking post-match in a video shared on Chris Cowlin’s YouTube channel, jokingly suggested that the Spurs full-back proved the entire bench wrong.

Ange Postecoglou’s charges got the better of Vincent Kompany’s Clarets at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to seal a place in the fourth round of the competition.

Admittedly, it wasn’t a vintage performance from Spurs. However, a 78th-minute moment of brilliance proved the difference between the Premier League duo.

Porro won the ball back inside the Burnley half, took a few touches and, with no defenders near him, fired unstoppable strike into the top-left corner from outside the box. The keeper didn’t even move.

After the game, Skipp was asked by the interviewer what he had made of the Spaniard’s great match-winner.

“I mean, I think the whole bench was screaming at him not to shoot,” said the 23-year-old. “And then he’s kind of stuck it in the top corner! I think it was a game of patience.”

Pedro Porro goes for glory and gets his just rewards

Normally when a player gets into such a good position, you get the stadium screaming “shoot”. And it’s a good job Porro did really, otherwise we’d be looking at a replay at the very least.

The bench will have probably been thinking more along the lines of Porro either swinging it into the box, sliding it through to Dejan Kulusevski on his right, or even waiting a second and setting up Bryan Gil on his left.

Another option would’ve been a through-ball to Brennan Johnson, but that would’ve been risky, as the Clarets defence and keeper looked to have it covered between them.

Porro had numerous opportunities available to him, but with so much room available to him and a bit of a gap in the Burnley defence, he decided to have a go. No doubt everyone is now happy with his split-second decision.
