Old Trafford Faithful: The perfect left-back for Manchester United

With all the talk about David Moyes wanting to bring in a new left-back as competition for Patrice Evra, and names such as Leighton Baines and Fabio Coentrao linked with a move to Old Trafford. We’ve decided to have a look at the possibilities, and our final outcome may surprise you.

There is no doubt Leighton Baines  would improve our starting XI, and for most of the summer I was all for signing the Everton man. My opinion changed after the first Premier League game of the season when I watched Southampton play. It was a tight game and it looked like a boring 0-0 draw was going to be entered into the record books, then up stepped a young 18-year old left-back. Luke Shaw dribbled past his man and ran into the box and won his side a late penalty which Rickie Lambert duly tucked away. Now I know this wasn’t much, but the hunger and desire Luke Shaw shown at such a young age is a barometer of how much he’ll improve through hard work.

Born in Kingston upon Thames, Shaw has been at Southampton’s highly regarded academy since the tender age of eight. An academy that has produced talent such as the most expensive player in the world, Gareth Bale, along with Arsenal duo Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott. At the age of 16, Manchester City were interested in his signature, but chose not to sign the player due to his £4m price tag. Since then, Southampton’s asking price has continued to rise, and last January, Chelsea saw a £10m bid rejected – showing just how much Southampton value their academy graduates. It’ll take a bid of at least £15m for Southampton to even consider selling him. The Saints are a club on the rise and they have no money troubles, so they really don’t have to sell as long as the player himself is happy.

The youngster has represented England at U16, 17, and this year he earned his first two caps at U21 level. The 6’1 wing-back has also been touted for the England senior side once Ashley Cole decides to call it a day, I just hope the national team don’t call him up too early.

Luke Shaw has to be the next Manchester United left-back. The 18-year old made his Premier League debut at just 17-years old, and since then has racked up almost thirty Premier League starts, and he doesn’t turn 19 until next summer meaning he’ll be able to offer the club at least ten years of service.

The rumour is that he’s a Chelsea fan though, and they’ll be looking for a new left-back soon with Ashley Cole ageing. Competition for his signature was always going to be fierce and he won’t come cheap, but as of right now Chelsea are probably in pole position to land him. Things can change though, and I’d be disappointed if United don’t go in for him in the next year or two.
