'Fantastic', 'love to see it': Some Everton fans react as club delivers 'brilliant news'
Some Everton fans have welcomed the news involving Toffees captain Seamus Coleman penning a contract extension.
The 32-year-old will now continue playing for the Goodison Park outfit until the summer of 2023, as per Everton’s Wednesday announcement.
Coleman has been a superb servant for the Blues since moving to Goodison Park from Irish side Sligo Rovers in 2009.
The right-back, who only cost Everton £60,000, has made 350 competitive appearances for the Toffees, registering 26 goals and 31 assists.
He was appointed Everton captain in 2019 and is also skipper for the Republic of Ireland, earning 59 caps since making his debut in 2011.
After signing his new contract, Coleman reiterated his desire to lead the Blues to silverware.
He also vowed to keep driving high standards for Rafael Benitez’s squad.
“I’m very happy – everyone around the football club and I’m sure all the fans know how much this club has meant to me from day one,” Coleman told the club media team.
“It’s a massive honour to extend my time here. It was about getting my head down and to keep working hard like I’ve always done, and the club decided to reward me with that. It’s something I’m very happy with.
“Hopefully now I can keep going as long as possible, give my experience to the younger lads, help and support them in any way I can, and contribute on the pitch as much as possible.”
Here is what some Everton fans made of the news:
Never let him leave. NEVER. The man deserves a job somewhere at the club for life.— Wooshell (@Wooshell1977) July 28, 2021
No problem with that. As long as we have another RB coming in. Been a great servant and I suppose it's a token of his loyalty that the club have give him a new deal. But he will know he can't go on forever. Need to get a new RB who can serve us just as long and well as Seamus has— GSav (@sav4efc) July 28, 2021
Gonna break my heart the day he retires, I’m still not fully recovered from Bainsey retiring 😢— Kierxn 🦋 (@KierxnOfficial) July 28, 2021
Good decision. Not many players who know the club and he has experience to pass on to the next generation. He will no doubt become a coach at the club when he retires 👌— 🃏 House of Scouse 🃏 (@HouseofScouse) July 28, 2021
Great news if only used to come on the last 5 mins to protect a lead or to play in the aldi cup, his knowledge of the club & experience can help the youngsters & the new boys but that's where it ends for me.— Thomas Mccarten 9 (@Thomas33466234) July 28, 2021
I'm happy Coleman is staying with us but he isn't going to be with us anymore soon. Need a new rb for when that time comes— Twirllz_ (@SpectrumGamin15) July 28, 2021
