After back to back defeats in the Premier League, Arsenal have faced a lot of criticism, Mikel Arteta’s team have come under attack.

Whether it’s a lack of goals, or an unnecessary switch of goalkeepers, fans have often raised questions during the course of the season.

However, the character of the Arsenal team itself has rarely come under scrutiny.

Declan Rice has formed a key part of Arsenal’s new, more resolute spine, accompanied by the impressive pairing of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba.

Although, after failing to beat or even secure a point against West Ham United and Fulham, the spirit of the squad has now been questioned by one pundit.

Speaking on ‘The Monday Night Club’, both Chris Sutton and Glen Murray were discussing the defeat and performance against Fulham on Sunday.

It was a lack of finishing that proved Arsenal’s undoing against West Ham, however, creativity as a whole was a struggle at Craven Cottage.

After the defeats Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side now sit fourth in the league, just one point ahead of rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

And following the latest abject display, Glen Murray has now questioned the desire of this Arsenal squad.

Glen Murray questions character of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal team after consecutive defeats

Speaking on the podcast, Murray said: “They were passive, they lacked energy, they didn’t move the ball quickly enough and in all honesty it looked like Fulham wanted it more.”

Sutton then replied: “Oh wow. Fulham wanted it more?! Come on. That can’t be the case. The Arsenal players what, went in with the mentality that they were just going to coast?

“They’re in a Premier League title race. If that’s the way you see it I would find that remarkable.”

Murray: “Do you think they moved the ball quick enough?”

Sutton: “Yes, but that’s a different thing to wanting it more isn’t it? That whole desire argument.

“I’m not going to question that. I thought it was a completely flat performance, these things happen.”

As Chris Sutton protests, Glen Murray’s comments do feel too strong.

Yes, Arsenal have been very disappointing over the last week or so, but they’ve already survived some tough tests this season.

Even Pep Guardiola’s great Manchester City teams endure difficult periods, it’s part of the game.

But with such a strong foundation in place, Arteta will surely be confident that his Arsenal side can bounce back from these defeats.

And in order to do so, it may be a good idea to consider the recall of one £25m loanee.
