‘Oh seriously, why’… Paul Merson left very annoyed by what Arsenal player did vs Porto

Paul Merson was left very frustrated with Kai Havertz during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash between Arsenal and Porto.

The 55-year-old made the comments when covering the game for Sky Sports.

So, why was Paul Merson annoyed with Arsenal No.29 Kai Havertz? Let’s take a look…

Paul Merson frustrated with Kai Havertz

Well, the Sky Sports pundit criticised the Germany international after watching back footage of his involvement in Martin Odegaard’s disallowed goal.

Merson initially claimed that there was nothing wrong with the Norway international’s dinked effort, but then had a little moan after seeing that Havertz actually tugged on the shirt of Pepe.

The man from Harlesden said: “Let’s see. No, it’s not a foul. That’s a goal. Pepe gets caught here. Oh, maybe he’s pulled his shirt. Oh seriously, why would you pull his shirt?

“He’s pulled his shirt but it’s not much.”

It seemed as if Havertz had actually done a tremendous piece of pressing work up against the experienced Pepe, but he frustratingly got a fistful of the Portugal international’s shirt just before Odegaard arrived on the scene.

Arsenal have transformed the £65m man

In our view, Havertz appeared to cut a lethargic figure at Chelsea, one who didn’t really seem interested a lot of the time and somewhat floated around in attacking areas.

However, Mikel Arteta has transformed the £65m man into a much hungrier forward, who chases lost causes and puts opposition defenders under pressure, just like he did with Pepe tonight before the clumsy shirt pull.

This energy, combined with smart movement and tidy touches to link up with the likes of Bukayo Saka, make Havertz a highly effective forward in this setup.

After plenty of confusion and bemusement following the German’s move to north London, he is now starting to become a key player for the Gunners.
