A number of Newcastle United fans have been left unimpressed by Jonjo Shelvey’s comments on Magpies teammate Martin Dubravka.
The Newcastle midfielder praised the St James’ Park goalkeeper, in conversation with In The Box podcast, but also tipped him to earn a “massive move” to a “top European club”.
Dubravka initially joined Newcastle on loan in January 2018 from Sparta Prague and signed permanently in the summer for a reported £4.3million.
The Slovakia international has been superb for the Magpies over the past two years, with 80 competitive appearances in all competitions under his belt, and has become a Toon Army fan favourite.
“He come in two years ago and I don’t think he has missed a Premier League game,” Shelvey told In The Box podcast.
“He has been literally outstanding. He is such a great shot-stopper and he is a great vocal person in the dressing room.
“The first game he played was against Man United. We beat them 1-0 at St James’ and he was unreal. I just thought: ‘Who’s this cat?’
“He had obviously come for cheap money and I do eventually think he will get a massive, massive move to a top European club. He is such a great lad as well around the dressing room.”
Needless to say, Shelvey’s comments didn’t go down particularly well amongst the Newcastle fans, particularly with the club on the verge of a potentially lucrative takeover in which Dubravka could find himself keeping goal for a team with real ambitions of glory.
Here is some of the social media reaction:
Always someone going for the “Let’s willfully misinterpret this tweet to keep myself entertained.”
He shouldn’t be giving interviews talking about our best players going elsewhere. Doesn’t take a genius to understand that.
