'Oh god', 'wow': Some Arsenal fans react to what they've read about Mustafi

A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on Shkodran Mustafi being released by Schalke after just a few months.

The Gunners signed Mustafi in the summer of  2016 for a reported £35million, and he spent four-and-a-half years with the north Londoners.

Mustafi clocked up 151 competitive appearances for Arsenal, and won two FA Cups and a Community Shield with the Gunners.

Last summer, the Germany international was reportedly offered a contract extension, but he turned it down with the intention of leaving at the end of the 2020-21 season.

Celtic strike Premier Sports deal - is this the "additional value" we've been waiting for?

Mustafi spent the first half of the season on the fringes of the Arsenal squad, making just nine appearances in all competitions for Mikel Arteta.

He left the Emirates Stadium permanently in the January transfer window and penned a short-term deal with Schalke, hoping to help them survive in the Bundesliga.

However, the Gelsenkirchen club couldn’t muster up a great escape and, with just 16 points from 37 games this season, they’ll be in the German second tier next term.

On Thursday, Schalke confirmed that Mustafi will be leaving the Veltins Arena when his contract expires at the end of June.

Some Arsenal fans are now baffled as to why the Gunners would have been offering a contract extension to a player who’s set to be released from a relegated club.
