Official transfer announcement now annoys Arsenal fans as ‘we are the worst’ claim made

Arsenal fans are growing impatient in regards to recruitment.

After Manchester United signed Matheus Cunha and Chelsea landed Liam Delap, the Gunners remain without a signing after five days of the transfer window officially being open.

That is despite the fact Mikel Arteta knows he needs attacking reinforcements, having been forced to rely on Mikel Merino as a striker in the second half of last season, after injuries to Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz.

Now, an official transfer announcement has emerged from the Emirates Stadium, but not the type Arsenal fans want to see.

Arsenal fans complain as Nuno Tavares announcement made

Arsenal have now announced the permanent departure of Nuno Tavares to Lazio – after the Portugal international spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan in Rome.

The Serie A side have triggered a £6m option to buy after the left-back impressed, providing nine assists in 30 appearances across all competitions.

It represents a £2m loss for Arsenal – who paid £8m to sign Tavares from Benfica back in July 2021 – and with little progress made in the hunt for a new attacking addition, fans are frustrated.

One Arsenal supporter wrote on X (previously known as Twitter) while adding a string of laughing emojis in disbelief: “How do you lose £2m on an £8m signing?”

Another couple of Arsenal supporters didn’t even know Tavares was still on the books.

One posted “he was still our player?” before another added “we still employed Nuno Tavares?!” – clearly, the Portuguese defender had been totally forgotten about.

Furthermore, a fourth Arsenal fan wrote “we are the worst at selling” after hearing the news.

That was perhaps the case when Arteta offloaded the likes of Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira, Bernd Leno and Konstantinos Mavropanos for small fees.

However, Arsenal improved in this respect across the last two summers, bringing in over £100m from the sales of Folarin Balogun, Eddie Nketiah, Emile Smith Rowe and Aaron Ramsdale.

Elsewhere, a fifth Arsenal fan complained about the insignificance of the news when a striker is still needed, posting: “This wasn’t what I meant when I said I wanted movement in the transfer market.”

Lastly, a sixth Arsenal supporter even argued that Tavares should have been kept around, writing: “We could have utilised Tavares this season considering the fact Tierney (another overlapping FB (full-back) is gone and we need an overlapping left FB.

“Liverpool (are) after (Milos) Kerkez. City (are) after (Rayan) Ait-Nouri. PSG has (Nuno) Mendes. Barca has (Alejandro) Balde. (Real) Madrid want to get an overlapping FB.”

Arsenal are also keen on signing Kerkez from Bournemouth, but the Hungary international is seemingly heading to Anfield.

Lazio could pile more misery on these Arsenal fans

Not only have Lazio sealed this £6m deal, but the Italian giants plan to sell the 25-year-old for an immediate profit, and potentially to a Premier League side.

Chelsea have taken notice of Tavares after his stunning 2024/25 campaign, in which he broke records for Lazio.

Everton also like Tavares, so the Gunners may well be coming up against the man born in Lisbon soon.

Arsenal have, however, negotiated a 40% sell-on clause, so if Lazio do end up selling the defender immediately for a larger fee, the Gunners will at least get a cut.
