Odysseas Vlachodimos signing would surely seal Newcastle exit for Freddie Woodman

Newcastle United reportedly want a new goalkeeper this summer. As per O Jogo, Odysseas Vlachodimos is a summer target.

Martin Dubravka was Newcastle’s first-choice stopper for most of last season. But it seems Rafa Benitez wants to increase competition for places in this department.

Vlachodimos currently plays for Benfica in the Primeira Liga. The twice-capped Greece international helped guide Benfica to the title in the Portuguese top-flight.

But if he moves to Newcastle, that could cause problems among their current goalkeepers. The Magpies have plenty of options between the sticks and these players will not remain satisfied.

This includes Freddie Woodman. According to The Chronicle, the England U21 starlet has grown frustrated with his lack of first-team games and Newcastle’s refusal to loan him out.

With just one year left on his deal, Woodman would surely refuse to sign a new contract. Vlachodimos’ arrival would push him further down the pecking order at St James’ Park.

The 22-year-old wants to be playing regularly to improve his game and reach the top. He could be Newcastle’s ideal long-term choice but they need to stop signing new goalkeepers if they want this to happen.

If Vlachodimos moves to Newcastle, Woodman would probably seek an exit. Whether that is on loan or permanently is irrelevant as a lack of first-team guarantees would see him leave Newcastle either this summer or next.
