Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho dropped a big selection hint for Sunday earlier this week, according to Tim Sherwood.
The former Spurs boss reckons that Gareth Bale’s role off the bench in Wednesday’s Europa League win over Wolfsberger suggests Mourinho plans to start him against Burnley.
Bale hasn’t had the best season so far amid injuries and a lack of fitness, but he’s finally starting to move up the gears.
The Welshman has two goals and two assists from his last three games, and as well as netting Tottenham’s third in midweek, he was always looking to make things happen.
Overall, Bale is looking a lot sharper, and Sherwood, speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Special (24/2), believes he could now be in contention for Sunday’s Premier League encounter.
“Gareth Bale came off the bench, so that tells me he’ll be playing against Burnley because why would you not start him? Someone who lacks match practise,” he said.
“He’s obviously resting him up. And he feels like he’s ready to start the Premier League game against Burnley, at the weekend.”
After several months of increasing scrutiny over Bale’s form and fitness, it’s fantastic to finally see him nearing his best.
Mourinho is a manager who demands the highest standards and, with Tanguy Ndombele now shining, hopefully it’ll be Bale and Dele Alli’s turn next.
