Nuno Espirito Santo will take to the dugout for the first time as West Ham United manager when his side face Everton on Monday evening.
The Hammers dismissed Graham Potter on Saturday morning, with Nuno confirmed as the Englishman’s replacement later that day.
Potter departed the London Stadium with the worst managerial win record in the club’s history, having lost 52% of his Premier League matches across his nine-month tenure.
It was indeed the right decision for the Hammers; no recognisable progress was made under the Englishman since he replaced Julen Lopetegui in January, and he had won only one of his opening five matches this season.
While there has been considerable speculation about which West Ham players will thrive under Nuno, one somewhat forgotten star could continue his resurgence after he once wreaked havoc against the Portuguese boss.
Crysencio Summerville could thrive under Nuno Espirito Santo
Crysencio Summerville almost single-handedly ended Nuno’s reign at Nottingham Forest as he assisted two of West Ham’s goals during the 3-0 win at the City Ground from an eight-minute cameo.
The new Hammers boss recognised Summerville’s instantaneous impact in his final outing at Forest and name-dropped him as the player who ultimately changed the game.
“We played the way West Ham wanted us to play. [They took advantage] of our mistakes, and they were well organised. We made mistakes that really punished us and took the game away.
“Especially Summerville, the speed that Graham [introduced] caused problems. When you want to chase [a goal], you leave space in behind and players with speed are difficult to control.”
Summerville was promised a regular role at the London Stadium following his arrival from Leeds United in 2024, but his time with the Irons has not panned out as hoped.
The 23-year-old featured only 19 times last season before a hamstring injury suffered in January ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.
He has, however, started the last two Premier League outings, and after Mohammed Kudus departed for Tottenham this summer, West Ham are in desperate need of another creative outlet.
Jermain Defoe once recognised Summerville’s creativity, and with Nuno having the opportunity to move his side out of the relegation zone on his debut, he could very well look to utilise his Dutch star at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Callum Wilson can continue his extraordinary record against Everton
According to BBC Sport, summer signing Callum Wilson has scored eight goals in his last seven outings against Everton in all competitions.
All of those goals have come in the form of braces, and the 33-year-old could be Nuno’s secret weapon for their trip to Merseyside.
The only team Wilson has scored more goals against than Everton is the Hammers, and with a monumental three points on the line, he must be in the starting line-up on Monday.
Niclas Fullkrug has looked no better than last year and has yet to open his account in the Premier League this season – it is the most straightforward decision Nuno will make in East London: start Summerville and Wilson, then sit back and watch them terrorise the Everton backline.
