Nottingham Forest’s season is essentially petering out but they did have an impact on the Championship play-off race that they would have hoped to have been part of when the season kicked off yesterday.
Martin O’Neill’s side saw off Middlesbrough 3-0 at the City Ground, thanks to a double from Joe Lolley, either side of a strike from Alexander Milosevic.
That struck a hammer blow to Boro’s play-off chances as well as giving Forest’s fans something to cheer in the sunshine as a campaign that started with optimism but hasn’t delivered a serious promotion push comes to an end.
The emergence of Lolley has been one of the biggest positives of an inconsistent season and he once more showed his quality with a performance which hauled the match in Forest’s direction.

The supporters took to Twitter to hail the fan favourite’s impressive display and some were begging him to stay with the transfer window set to open.
With Forest having failed to make the grade, question marks over O’Neill’s management and Lolley having shown this season that he can be a difference maker in the second tier, their nerves are understandable.
But for now, they get to enjoy what Lolley can bring to the party and they certainly enjoyed yesterday’s performance…
