Nottingham Forest started the season with realistic and genuine hopes of at least qualifying for the play-offs, but ended up finishing ninth.
They just didn’t quite manage to get the consistency together, either under Aitor Karanka or Martin O’Neill, to sustain a top six push.
But they finished with a victory, a 1-0 win over relegated Bolton Wanderers, secured by a first half goal by Joe Lolley, who has been the club’s outstanding player this campaign.
He was named the club’s player of the year, deservedly so, and has been one of the most creative players in the league.
There might be a lesson in a relatively unheralded and affordable signing making the impact in a season after the summer of mass upheaval and players coming in from here there and everywhere.
But Forest fans know how vital it is to keep Lolley at the club this summer as O’Neill looks to put together a squad which can challenge for promotion next season.
They took to Twitter to hail Lolley after one final masterclass for the 2018/19 season and beg him to remain at the club beyond the transfer window…
Don’t you go anywhere this summer young man..(said in a brian clough voice)
