Adlene Guedioura started Nottingham Forest’s New Year’s Day clash with Championship leaders Leeds United on the bench yesterday but was pressed into action very early on.
When central defender Michael Hefele was forced off by injury after just five minutes, the experienced midfielder was Aitor Karanka’s perhaps surprising choice to replace him.
But Guedioura soon got up to speed with a Forest performance that was designed to put Leeds under intense pressure, which paid off when Jack Colback forced a mistake from Adam Forshaw and capitalised to ensure it was Aitor Karanka’s side who went in 1-0 up at the interval.
But just before the break, he was at the centre of an incident that changed the complexion of the match; Kalvin Phillips flew into Guedioura with a reckless challenge which warranted a red card and suddenly their hopes of stunning the leaders were very realistic indeed.

But Leeds came out with a renewed energy and an adventurous gameplan in the second half, which saw them go into a 2-1 lead; at which point the outlook was looking very bleak indeed for under-fire Karanka.
But Guedioura was instrumental in wrestling back control of the match as Forest went on to win 4-2 and the supporters were keen to show their appreciation for the midfielder on Twitter in the aftermath of the match…
