Why Nottingham Forest should end pursuit Liverpool’s overpriced Sheyi Ojo

Reports in The Sun this week claimed that Liverpool were looking to offload winger Sheyi Ojo for a fee of over £10 million, and Championship clubs Reading and Nottingham Forest are among the interested parties.

Forest should avoid signing Ojo at all costs, as the Liverpool youngster is vastly overpriced and has failed to succeed in the Championship.

Although the reliability of the media reports may be doubted, it is clear the Merseyside club are looking to sell Ojo and Aitor Karanka recently told the Nottingham Post that he cannot rule out further signings this summer.

“You never know. If you get a call or a surprise deal; if somebody wants to join us and he is the right one for the project, then they will come. I need to try to have the best squad that we can have; the best squad possible when the transfer window closes.”

However, to fork over £10 million for the 21-year-old would represent a misguided decision, as Ojo endured a largely disappointing campaign with Fulham last season.

His loan spell at Craven Cottage peaked with an impressive late fall and early winter string of performances, yet following the January transfer window Ojo fell out of the squad as he was deemed surplus to requirements.

Ojo possesses the ability to run at defenders and serve dangerous deliveries, but often he fades in and out of matches and struggles to make an impact.

Far from a regular at Fulham, the England youth international is not worth a significant permanent investment this summer.

Considering Forest’s strength in attack and Sheyi Ojo’s expensive price tag, the club should avoid purchasing the winger this summer and instead focus on the final piece in their promotion puzzle: a top-class right back.
