Nottingham Forest are close to signing Morgan Gibbs-White from Wolves, with the Reds said to be nearing the £40m asking-price.

So far, Wolves have turned down a number of bids from Forest for Gibbs-White. Indeed, Bruno Lage even selected the midfielder in his starting XI this weekend, in a sign that the Wolves boss intends to keep his man.

However, The Telegraph has reported tonight that Forest are getting closer to meeting a £40m asking-price set by Wolves, and that could be enough to get the deal done. As reported as well, it’s widely known that Gibbs-White is more than willing to sign for Forest and work with Steve Cooper once again.

Gibbs-White was sensational while out on loan with Sheffield United last season. The Blades had no chance of signing him after missing out on promotion, opening the door for Forest to land a player whose missed penalty helped them seal promotion themselves.

Should Forest land Gibbs-White for £40m, it would take their summer spending up to around the £150m mark. The club have invested heavily in new players, with Jesse Lingard among the eye-catching signings.

TBR’s View: Forest Gambling With Big Money

It’s all well and good spending big money when you go up and Forest did need new players, but they’re into the territory now of having to stay up really.

£150m is a huge outlay for a newly promoted club. Gibbs-White, despite his talent, is also a risk at £40m and Steve Cooper will now be under pressure to deliver if that deal is done.

Credit to Forest’s board though. They needed to back their manager and they have done, with Gibbs-White surely the icing on the cake signing the club wanted.
