David Moyes turned down chance to sign £14m World Cup winner last year

West Ham United are currently struggling at the foot of the Premier League after a dismal run of results.

David Moyes’ job now hangs in the balance, with rumours already circulating about potential replacements.

Moyes has spoken to Steven Bartlett on his Diary Of A CEO Podcast.

He covered a wide range of topics and discussed a number of key moments throughout his career.

Moyes was talking about the regret of missing out on players in the transfer market, and Bartlett asks him which player he regrets missing out on the most.

Moyes explained that he had turned down the chance to sign Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez last year.

“Well, just recently because we’ve been talking about it, [Julian] Alvarez who’s just played for Argentina at the World Cup,” Moyes said.

“I brought in a new scout who says, ‘look, you should go for Alvarez at River Plate’, and I watched him and he’s very good, really good technician, I thought he had done so many good things as a centre-forward.

“But, I thought, ‘maybe he’s not quite the one we want’, we had Michy Antonio who had been doing very well.

“And you see sometimes the players change in six months.

“I have to say there’s other players like that who you don’t go on to be real successes, but that one at the moment is just one, because it was probably only a year ago that I decided, ‘no, I don’t think it’s probably the one we’re going to take’.”

Moyes turned down signing Alvarez last year

The £14m forward was absolutely sensational for Argentina as they went on to win the World Cup last year.

After missing out in their opening game against Saudi Arabia, he started every knockout game, scoring four goals.

He’s very much been an impact player for Manchester City since joining the club, and has to compete with Erling Haaland for minutes.

His Man City teammates have been raving about him in training, and he’s managed to score three league goals in 368 minutes of football.

Plenty of West Ham fans will be disappointed to hear that Moyes turned down the chance to sign Alvarez.

Antonio hasn’t been the same player this season, and Gianluca Scamacca has taken time to adapt to his new club.

The Hammers could certainly do with a player of Alvarez’s quality to help them escape the relegation zone.

They look bereft of confidence and are very much in a scrap at the bottom of the table this season.
