‘Not going to Arsenal’: Jamie Carragher makes claim about two-time Champions League winner

Jamie Carragher believes Jose Mourinho would never be appointed at Arsenal in wake of his stint at their north London rivals.

While both Arsenal and Tottenham have had their fair share of issues this season, Mikel Arteta remains well-supported amongst the majority of Gunners fans.

Mourinho, meanwhile, was sacked as Spurs boss on Monday, with interim boss Ryan Mason taking charge of the team until the end of the season.

Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs in November 2019, leading them to a sixth-placed finish in his debut season in charge.

However, Tottenham have struggled this season and currently sit five points adrift of the Champions League places.

Spurs also suffered an embarrassing Europa League exit to Dinamo Zagreb in March and are out of the FA Cup too.

Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, claimed he doesn’t see a way for Mourinho to join another club in the division.

“I don’t see Mourinho back in the Premier League, I think that ship’s sailed now,” he said.

“I struggle to think of any club – he’s been at Spurs, so he’s not going to Arsenal, he’s been at United so he’s not going to City, Liverpool wouldn’t have him.

“Would he go to a middle of the table club? I just don’t see him there, I really don’t. It’s either international football or maybe Italy.

“The Italian champions this year will be Inter Milan, with Antonio Conte, who plays his type of football.

“So maybe you can get away with it a little bit more in Italy, because it was certainly a turn-off for Spurs supporters.”

Mourinho’s CV is certainly impressive, with two Champions Leagues and three Premier League titles amid many more across several clubs in different nations.

However, his last three jobs – Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs – have all seen him axed following downturns in form.

Anyway, Arsenal fans are extremely unlikely to accept Mourinho were Mikel Arteta to leave due to his style of play, and that’s well before looking at his prior stint with their rivals.
