‘Not even he’s that daft’… Chris Sutton says £20m player would never join Manchester United

Chris Sutton has now been discussing the prospect of one former Premier League star joining Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United in January.

It remains to be seen just how active United will be in the transfer window this month, with links to Everton’s Amadou Onana now emerging.

There’s no doubt that ten Hag’s could use a mid-season boost, especially if Jadon Sancho does join Borussia Dortmund.

It must remain a big frustration that Sancho wasn’t able to realise his potential with United – but that is becoming a familiar tale.

Young players are finding it tough to find their feet at Old Trafford after signing, just ask Rasmus Hojlund.

So perhaps it could be an idea to head in the other direction, to add experienced heads and characters to ten Hag’s project.

However, when discussing the future of Jordan Henderson – who reportedly wants to return to the Premier League, Chris Sutton thought there was no chance he could head to United in January.

Speaking on the BBC’s ‘Transfer Gossip Daily’, Sutton thought Henderson would avoid another ill-advised move.

He said: “Would Klopp take him back at Liverpool? Don’t think so. Arsenal? No.

“He couldn’t go to Manchester United could he? Not even he’s that daft. Even after going to Saudi if he ended up at Manchester United that would be daft. He could go to Chelsea youth team, their development squad, but that’s unlikely.

“I don’t see this as being as easy as it sounds.”

Of course, Manchester United fans might not be too keen to see the former Liverpool captain join, either.

As Sutton suggests, it doesn’t seem that there’s any real option in the Premier League for £20m Henderson in January, and there especially shouldn’t be one at United.

But that’s certainly not to say that United wouldn’t benefit from a midfielder arriving this month on the whole.

If Henderson didn’t have his Liverpool connections he probably would be an excellent signing for ten Hag – even if it may prove costly.

But perhaps a move for Everton’s Amadou Onana would me much more progressive, a player who still has his best years ahead of him.
