‘Not bad Jackie’: Rangers legend Kris Boyd savours Ibrox glory with dig at former Celtic man

When Rangers eased to a comfortable 2-0 win over their rivals at Celtic Park in October, one former Celtic man was reluctant to give them their due.

Jackie McNamara, who made 358 appearances for the club, told the 67 Hail Hail podcast: “I think the frustrating thing is they are not a good side, they are not a good team but they were organised, the way he (Steven Gerrard) organises them every game.”

Evidently, Kris Boyd has not forgotten those words.

Celtic’s failure to beat Dundee United at Tannadice on Sunday ensured that Rangers were crowned champions of the top flight for the first time since 2011, and ex-Rangers man Boyd was beaming as he appeared alongside McNamara on Sky Sports.

Boyd, who won two Premier League titles in his first spell at Ibrox, said: “They’ve run away with it, rightly so.

“They’ve been outstanding from the get-go, and I think there’s a lot of things that have gone on at Celtic, but let’s not speak about that, because Rangers have been excellent.

“They’ve gone about their business right from day one, we covered them that day at Pittodrie, they found a way to get the victory up there, and they’ve been excellent since.

“Not bad for a team that’s not that good Jackie.”

“There’s no doubt that Rangers have been deserved winners” replied McNamara, adding: “They’ve won it comfortably. It’s just disappointing that Celtic haven’t put more of a challenge up, but I think you see in today’s game the problems that they’ve had throughout the season.

“Not being clinical in the last little bits, and it’s cost them.”

Boyd and McNamara’s former sides will meet in the next round of Premiership fixtures, with Celtic hosting the new champions on March 21.

Rangers are in European action before then, with their Europa League round of 16 away leg against Slavia Prague taking place on Thursday.
