'Not a chance': Gary Neville makes bold claim about Spurs and their fans
Gary Neville has claimed that Spurs fans played a huge part in helping their team beat Manchester City.
Indeed, the Sky Sports pundit says he wouldn’t have given Tottenham a chance of winning after the opening 10 minutes.
Nuno Espirito Santo got his competitive Spurs tenure off to a winning start with a superb 1-0 win over Pep Guardiola’s side.
Tottenham – playing in front of a full house at N17 – started slowly and nearly conceded early on through Joao Cancelo.
However, Spurs grew into the game and went on to take the lead in the second half through Son Heung-min.
Spurs fans “got them going” – Neville
Neville, writing for Sky Sports, welcomed the return of fans and noted how important the Spurs supporters were in helping their team out.
“It’s been an absolutely sensational weekend,” he began. “I feel enthralled to be watching football again.
“It’s been hard over the last 18 months for fans not being allowed into the stadiums, for players without the fans, for us commentating on it at times, it was a little bit laborious and we had to put a brave face on.
“But when they’re back in the stadium and you see it like it is today, it’s so special.
“What would Tottenham have been like without the fans? 15 minutes in, demoralised, it’s quite a warm day, but the fans got them going.
“That first counter-attack they had, the fans lifted them and then they grew in the game.
“If you said to me after 10 minutes, Tottenham would win that game, I would have said not a chance.
“They looked completely out of it, City looked like a different world.
“But Tottenham got better and better with encouragement and I think that’s how you beat a big team, you gain confidence throughout the match.
“You can’t just beat them in the first 10 minutes because they’ll come back.”
