A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to bemoan the confirmation that Shkodran Mustafi will miss the rest of the Gunners’ 2019-20 season.

The 28-year-old picked up a strain late in the 2-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City at Wembley, being replaced by Rob Holding for the final few minutes.

On Thursday, Mikel Arteta had doubted whether Mustafi would have been back in time for the FA Cup final on 1 August, and the following day, Arsenal’s team update confirmed the bad news.

“Right hamstring sustained during FA Cup semi-final on Saturday,” said the statement. “Will miss remaining matches of this season. Further details on recovery programme will be confirmed in the coming days.”

Just a few months ago, this update wouldn’t have been deemed a particularly huge blow by some Gunners fans, given Mustafi was frozen out under Unai Emery.

However, Arteta’s arrival has given the defender’s Arsenal career a new lease of life and, prior to his injury, he had started nine out of 10 matches since the Premier League restart.

Needless to say, the Mustafi injury update hasn’t gone down too well with plenty of Arsenal fans on social media:
