Danny Murphy claims Rangers boss Steven Gerrard would not swap Ibrox for Aston Villa – and Gabriel Agbonlahor has reacted on Twitter.

Dean Smith left the club on Sunday after more than three years at the club. It comes after Villa suffered a 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Friday night.

Villa are now dangerously teetering above the relegation zone, and need to find themselves a new manager sooner rather than later.

Roberto Martinez, Steven Gerrard, John Terry and Frank Lampard are all names said to be on the club’s radar. Gerrard is impressing at Rangers.

The Record say, among numerous other outlets, that Gerrard is on Villa’s radar. But Murphy questioned why he would leave Rangers for Villa.

“I’d be very surprised if he left Rangers to go to Villa,” Murphy told TalkSPORT. “Villa are a great club. There is only so far you can take them.”

Agbonlahor, a Villa legend, responded – blasting Murphy for his comments with a four-word Tweet. The Villa fan has now returned to Twitter.

Agbonlahor blasts Murphy: Should Rangers boss Gerrard join Villa?

It is whether Gerrard – and Liverpool – feel the Rangers gaffer needs a Premier League stepping stone, or if he can simply go Ibrox to Anfield.

Frank Lampard’s short stint at Chelsea, which started spectacularly but ended in disappointment, suggests a club is needed before Liverpool

A mid-table side, capable of breaking into the top half of the Premier League table. Villa have the finances and the players to do so.

Villa would be a great job for Gerrard. He should consider Villa – whether he will do so is another question, only to be found out if Villa approach him.
