Noel Whelan has explained to BBC Radio Leeds (7/11; 17:22) what he made of Raphinha’s performance in Leeds United’s defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
It proved to be another hugely disappointing time for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. A questionable offside decision and a freak own goal contributed to Leeds going 3-1 down at half-time.

The deficit prompted Bielsa to introduce Raphinha at the break. And the summer signing produced an encouraging performance as Leeds tried to get back into the contest.
The 23-year-old showed plenty of intent when running forward with the ball. He also made a couple of impressive passes to switch the play and provide Leeds with a potential opening on the other side of the pitch.

Unfortunately, he was not able to inspire a turnaround for the Whites. But Whelan suggested that the winger showed enough to make him think that he should be starting games soon.
“I think Raphinha when he came on gave us a different dimension. He showed his class, showed his skill. Some tight control of the ball, driving inside, linking up with players, switching the play, range of passing,” he told BBC Radio Leeds.
“He’s someone who really excited me when I knew that he was coming to Leeds United. And we’ve seen little glimpses. We saw a lot more of him this evening when he came on and I do feel that he had a lot to offer. And I’d like to see him start and given that opportunity.”
TBR View: First start for Raphinha is not far away
Helder Costa was the man who came off for Raphinha. But in truth, it was not a good day for Jack Harrison on the opposite flank either.
Of course, Harrison and Costa have been outstanding at times this season. So you could understand if Bielsa was reluctant to drop either player anytime soon.
But Raphinha looks to be knocking on the door. So it may not be too long before he gets a chance to finally make his full debut for Leeds.
