Noel Whelan has told BBC Radio Leeds (broadcast on 4/7; 17:10) that he would agree that Barry Douglas produced his best performance for Leeds United in their 3-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
Douglas was brought into the starting lineup by Marcelo Bielsa with both Stuart Dallas and Helder Costa sidelined with injury.
The left-back has not started a game since January. And he has only made one substitute appearance in that time.
That has largely been down to the outstanding form of Dallas. But Douglas has also struggled to stave off injury and produce the form that helped Wolves get promoted to the Premier League before his Elland Road switch.
But he undoubtedly silenced a number of doubters at Ewood Park. Douglas was excellent as Leeds collected three vital points at the top of the Championship.
He looked composed on the ball and created problems when he got forward and offered another option out wide.
And when asked whether Leeds fans had just seen Douglas’s best performance for the club, Whelan suggested that that was the case.
“Yeah, I thought he was really impressive today,” he told BBC Radio Leeds (broadcast on 4/7; 17:10), when asked whether it was his best display for Leeds.
“Considering that he’s not played that much football and struggled with injuries this season. But fantastic to see him out there. We know he’s got the quality. We’ve not always seen it since his arrival here at Elland Road.
“But today, we definitely saw the real Barry Douglas that we knew was there. Very composed on the ball, great left-foot, great energy up and down, box to box. But defending, absolutely quality. I can’t remember too many when he was beaten.”
TBR View: Douglas stakes big claim
Douglas certainly appears to have left Bielsa with a tough decision to make. Many may have expected Dallas to return as soon as he is fit. But that may now not be the case.
Dallas would be extremely unlucky to not get back into the team in one position or another. But Bielsa has shown that he is reluctant to rotate if changes are not required.
Douglas certainly appears to have done all he can to ensure that a change is indeed not needed.
